Welcome back to another episode of the Homegrown Liberty Podcast, this is episode 43. Today we have a really cool technology and product that we are going to try out for you guys. It’s called CoolBot and is a DIY walk-in cooler gizmo. No specific endorsement just yet. But like I said in the past I promise to only bring you guys things that I believe in and at least have researched well, if not tried myself. And this episode is not actually going to be me doing the talking! We’re throwing a curve ball at you today.

I’m currently at Jack Spirko’s place teaching at a homesteading workshop all about building soil and some other things. So I wasn’t able to do an episode this week. Instead I convinced a friend of mine to interview someone from CoolBot. This is a relatively new technology that turns an air conditioner and an insulated room into a walk-in cooler!
Now it’s not cheap to make an insulated room, but it’s cheaper than buying a walk-in refrigerator! Anyways, I’ll not get too much into it. Just wanted to give you guys a rundown of what today’s show was going to be about and let you know that Ken is going to be doing the interview for me, so without further blabbering on my part, here’s Ken!

[INTERVIEW WITH KEN AND COOLBOT]

Well there ya have it! We’re going to test this sucker out and see if it’s everything it’s cracked up to be and I’m going to track down some personal testimonials and maybe we’ll be back with a discount code for you guys if we decide it’s a good product. I hope you all enjoyed this, if you like these kinds of shows, let me know and I’ll do them more often. I know there are lots of products and technologies out there that can make our lives easier.

I’m interested in this one particularly because with our soils, we can’t afford to build a root cellar just yet. But it’s a whole lot more affordable to insulate and close in our breezeway, and use a CoolBot to keep the room around 55 degrees. That’s perfect cellar temps and if it costs us $2000 instead of $12,000 to build a nice sized root cellar with excavating, pouring concrete and all that. Man, talk about a time saver!

One report on the cost of setting up a cold room is in a blog post here but I’ll quote it for you “they used two CoolBots along with two 18,000 BTU window A/C units in a 9’x10’x8’ room with 6” of polystyrene insulation on the walls and floor and 4.5” on the ceiling. The total cost of the build was about $4,000 CDN (~$3,000 USD).” That’s not too bad in my humble opinion. And the thing is, you don’t need that much insulation if you aren’t trying to hit refrigerator temps!

It would be amazing to be able to meet the need for cool food storage for such a small investment. When you compare to a root cellar or spending a minimum of 6 grand, up to 20 grand for a commercial grade walk in cooler. No thanks! I’ll take the cheaper route that gets us what we need!

Anyways, keep your eyes peeled for an update on this in the future, I’m excited to try this cool (har har) technology out.

That wraps things up…

I’ll be headed home from teaching and doing several consults by the first week of November and I’m looking forward to the next episode on the show, I hope you are too!

Until next week

I hope you have a wonderful day, God Bless. And as always “Go Do Good Things”

  1. I made a coolbot cooler for my milk. I have cows and a herdshare and this coolbot was the greatest thing I put down by my milking parlor. It keeps the milk at 34 degrees and is awesome.

  2. Hello!
